For the past two years, Groove Phi Groove Social Fellowship Incorporated has sponsored College Bus Tours for inner city youth to expose them to life on a college campus. The selection of a college is a major decision for any young person and that person’s family. When students in our community start to think seriously about their career aspirations, they must understand that higher education is a door that can expand their options.
Groove Phi Groove Social Fellowship Incorporated, as an organization of college educated men, recognizes that a college degree can enhance a person’s self-esteem, career choices, and earning potential. Our youth can never accept the opinion of any individual, when told they are not college material. Let the student actively participate in the decision on a free college campus tour.
In the past two years, we completed two campus bus tours to several Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) including the following:
- Bowie State College
- Morgan State College
- Coppin State
- Cheyney University
As our College Bus Tour program expands, we plan to target additional schools to include: Delaware State University and Lincoln University in PA.
With the support of a committed group of volunteer members; friends; and donors, bus tours are coordinated and organized by our National Community Service Committee.
We partner with other non-profit organizations, community-based youth service groups, and area secondary schools to identify our student participants. We work with admission officers and recruiters from targeted institutions of higher education for support with scheduling, tour guides and onsite presentations. Fellowship members and parents serve as chaperones for these one day excursions. Tours include chartered bus accommodations, meals, and campus visits to one or more schools.
On the date of the event, chartered tour buses depart from one of several predetermined locations. Participants are pre-screened and expected to arrive to a designated location on time. Buses return to the departure location at an approximate time. From the departure location, participants are responsible for their transportation home.
In April 2015 participants departed from locations in Paterson NJ and Philadelphia PA. Participants from the Paterson NJ locations visited two college locations in the Baltimore, MD area: Morgan State College and Coppin State. In addition to these locations, Philadelphia area participants also visited Cheyney University.
This year we plan to schedule a bus tour to visit Delaware State University and Lincoln University.
Contributions help cover the cost of transportation, meals and tee shirts. Please help us to help our youth. Donations are accepted via GoFundme.
